How OwnersYelp Works

Everything you need to know before joining — the process, the rules, and the legal guardrails that protect everyone.

01 — What is this?

A private network where business owners look out for each other

OwnersYelp is a private, invite-only platform exclusively for verified business owners. It lets you share factual incident reports about problem customers — the ones who don't pay, abuse your staff, file fraudulent complaints, or leave retaliatory reviews.

Think of it like a neighborhood watch for the business community. When a serial problem customer hits your business, you file a report. Nearby business owners in your network see the alert. If that same person has been reported at other businesses, the pattern becomes visible — something no single owner could see on their own.

This is not

A public shaming site. A place to rant. A way to doxx someone. A replacement for law enforcement. OwnersYelp is a private, structured, fact-based intelligence network for verified business owners.

02 — Who can join?

Verified business owners only — no exceptions

Every member of OwnersYelp is a verified business owner. No consumers, no anonymous accounts, no unverified users. To join, you must:

1

Create an account

Sign up with your name, email, and a secure password. This gets you into the system, but you can't do anything yet.

2

Submit verification documents

Upload your business license, EIN confirmation letter, or equivalent documentation proving you own a real, operating business.

3

Get verified

Our team reviews your documents and confirms your business is legitimate. This typically takes 1-2 business days. Once verified, the full platform opens up to you.

4

Join or create a circle

Circles are private groups of trusted owners — organized by geography, industry, or both. Get invited by someone already in a circle, or create your own and invite owners you know personally.

Why verification matters

Verification is the foundation of trust. It ensures that every report on the platform was filed by a real business owner about a real incident at a real business. It prevents abuse and gives the entire network credibility.

03 — What you can report

Structured, factual, evidence-based

OwnersYelp uses a structured report format — not a blank text box. You select an incident type from a predefined list, enter the date and time, write a factual description of what happened, and attach any supporting evidence from your business premises.

Incident types

NON-PAYMENTCustomer consumed services or products and left without paying, or disputed a valid charge
VERBAL ABUSE OF STAFFCustomer yelled at, cursed at, threatened, or verbally intimidated employees
HARASSMENT OF CUSTOMERSCustomer behavior disrupted, intimidated, or negatively impacted other patrons
FRAUDULENT COMPLAINTCustomer filed a false complaint to obtain free services, refunds, or discounts
RETALIATORY REVIEWCustomer left a negative online review as retaliation for being held accountable
PROPERTY DAMAGECustomer intentionally damaged business property, equipment, or facilities
THEFT OF SERVICESCustomer obtained services through deception or without authorization
TRESPASSINGIndividual returned to premises after being previously asked not to return
CHARGEBACK / FRAUDCustomer initiated a chargeback or used fraudulent payment methods

What a report looks like

Every report follows the same structured format:

Example: "Customer completed 18 holes and disputed the $47 greens fee at checkout. Became verbally aggressive with front desk staff when asked to pay. Left the premises without settling the bill. Security camera footage from the pro shop captured the interaction at 2:15 PM."

Notice what's there: facts, dates, times, and evidence. Notice what's NOT there: no opinions, no name-calling, no emotional language. The platform enforces this by design.

04 — The rules

What you can and cannot include

These aren't suggestions — they're enforced by the platform architecture. The system is designed so that you literally cannot include prohibited content.

Allowed

  • Factual descriptions of what happened
  • Dates, times, and locations
  • Security camera photos and video from your premises
  • Receipts and chargeback documentation
  • Police reports, if applicable
  • First names only (if given during a transaction)

Prohibited

  • Full names (first + last)
  • Home addresses
  • License plate numbers
  • Social media profiles
  • Opinions or character attacks
  • Race, ethnicity, religion, disability, or any protected characteristic
  • Speculation about motive
Why these rules exist

These guardrails aren't here to limit you — they're here to protect you. Every report on OwnersYelp is legally defensible because it's factual, structured, and free of content that could be considered discriminatory or defamatory. The rules protect the platform, and the platform protects you.

05 — Privacy and legal

Built on a legal-first foundation

Is this legal?

Yes. OwnersYelp operates within established legal frameworks. Businesses have always had the right to refuse service based on conduct — non-payment, abuse, fraud, property damage. California courts have consistently upheld this right. What businesses cannot do is refuse service based on identity — race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics. OwnersYelp reports conduct, never identity.

Who sees my reports?

Only verified business owners in your circles can see your reports. OwnersYelp is not a public website. There is no public search, no consumer access, and no search engine indexing. Reports are shared within a private, trusted network — not broadcast to the internet.

What about the people being reported?

Subject identification is visual only — security camera stills from your public-facing business premises. No full names are attached. No home addresses. No social media profiles. No license plates. The platform does not have fields for this information — it's not a policy you agree to follow, it's a technical constraint you cannot override.

What about facial recognition?

OwnersYelp does not use facial recognition

Photos on the platform are visual references reviewed by human eyes — never processed through facial recognition software, automated face matching, or any biometric analysis. This is a permanent design decision, not a feature we plan to add later.

What if a report is inaccurate?

OwnersYelp has a built-in dispute and appeal process. Any verified owner can flag a report as inaccurate, retaliatory, or in violation of platform guidelines. Disputed reports are reviewed, and owners who consistently file reports that violate guidelines lose their filing privileges.

06 — Circles

How the network grows

OwnersYelp doesn't grow through advertising or viral marketing. It grows through trust.

Circles are private groups of business owners who know and trust each other. A golf course owner creates a circle and invites three course owners she knows personally. One of them also owns a restaurant and brings in five restaurant owners. A nail salon owner in the group invites her network. The platform expands organically through real relationships.

Geographic circles

"South Orange County Service Industry" — owners in the same area, across different business types.

Industry circles

"OC Golf Course Owners" — owners in the same industry, sharing industry-specific patterns.

Overlapping membership

Owners can belong to multiple circles. A restaurant owner might be in both a geographic circle and a dining industry circle. Reports flow through shared memberships, connecting circles naturally.

07 — Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Reports are factual incident logs shared within a private, verified business network — not public posts. Truth is an absolute defense against defamation. Our structured reporting format guides you toward objective, factual descriptions and away from opinion or character attacks.

No. OwnersYelp is a private, owner-only network. There is no public-facing directory, no search engine indexing, and no consumer accounts. Reports and alerts are only visible to verified business owners within the network.

Multiple safeguards: owner verification, structured factual-only reporting, AI-assisted content review that blocks prohibited content before publication, community flagging of questionable reports, a formal dispute and appeal process, and strict terms of service. Repeat violators lose access.

Any customer-facing business — golf courses, restaurants, bars, salons, spas, retail stores, hotels, fitness centers, auto shops, professional services, entertainment venues, and more. If you deal with customers face-to-face and have experienced problem customer behavior, OwnersYelp is built for you.
